It’s been rather the year for Washington Commanders quarterback Sam Howell. After Washington was removed from the playoffs in Week 17, head coach Ron Rivera called Howell the beginning quarterback for Week 18 versus the Dallas Cowboys. It took a little cajoling from Taylor Heinicke for Rivera to name Howell the starter.

It’s not that Rivera didn’t desire to play Howell; he desired Heinicke to start and bring Howell in to play the rest of the videogame. Heinicke persuaded Rivera that Howell made the chance, and the coach concurred.

Howell played well in Washington’s win over the Cowboys. While he wasn’t best, no one anticipated him to be; he flashed his arm strength, precision, decision-making and running capability in the win. That was enough to persuade the Commanders he’d made the possibility to win the beginning quarterback position in 2023.
