U.S. females’s nationwide group captain Becky Sauerbrunn will missouton the 2023 World Cup.

In a post on Twitter and Instagram on Friday night, Sauerbrunn stated “there’s too much irregularity” in her return from a foot injury for her to be at the World Cup. Sauerbrunn hurt her foot in April while playing for the National Women’s Soccer League’s Portland Thorns FC. The Athletic had reported earlier in the day that Sauerbrunn did not make the 23-player USWNT lineup. The complete lineup for the World Cup, which starts July 20 in New Zealand and Australia, will be launched next week.

“Heartbroken isn’t even the half of it,” Sauerbrunn composed. “But that’s sports for you and that’s life, actually.

“It’s been an honor to work and play alongwith this amazing group of professionalathletes,” she continued. “They have my unwavering assistance. And, more significantly, they have my unyielding belief. This program has constantly been about the cumulative and I have no doubt that the 23 gamers on the last lineup have whatever they requirement — in their feet, their heads and their hearts — to bring our 5th prize house.”
