Patrick Mahomes returns to Super Bowl after harming ankle in veryfirst half

Patrick Mahomes may have re-aggravated his right ankle sprain late in the veryfirst half of Super Bowl LVII. He returned to the field to start the 2nd half.

The Chiefs quarterback came up hopping after a third-down scramble late in the veryfirst half. Mahomes remained down for longer than typical priorto getting up and plainly preferring his right ankle. 

Mahomes hopped to the Chiefs’ sideline and sat on the bench, grimacing at . He spoke with coach Andy Reid and attempted to walk off the injury on the sideline. He was able to jog to the locker space at halftime, however did not appear to run with his normal gait.

The Eagles led 24-14 at the break.

Mahomes initially suffered the injury throughout the Chiefs’ AFC divisional round success over Jacksonville, and the injury plainly troubled him in the AFC Championship Game.

Mahomes had a strong veryfirst half, finishing 8 of 13 passes for 89 backyards with a goal and including 11 backyards on the ground. However, the Eagles have kept the MVP off the field for the most part, holding the ball for more than 21 of the veryfirst 30 minutes.

FOX Sports NFL pressreporter Erin Andrews reported throughout the broadcast that Mahomes informed colleagues he was fine.

FOX Sports injury professional Dr. Matt Provencher had this to state about Mahomes’ ankle:

“The injury appeared to be comparable to the initial high-ankle sprain he continual in the divisional playoffs.  He was definitely in discomfort, and noticeably hopping off the field. I anticipate to see Mahomes come back for the 2nd half after taping and treatment in the locker space.

“Keep in mind that the Super Bowl halftime is 29 minutes long and Mahomes will requirement to keep the ankle limber and lessen swelling. His movement will be impacted to some level, as well as his capability to toss deep, provided that it is his back leg.”
